Planting
sunflowers in containers
Sunflowers are
not only an extremely quick growing plant in containers, but
they also are quite hardy and can be planted quite late in
the season. So if you are a bit late in your planting this
year, sunflowers are an excellent choice because they make
a colorful splash in your garden or on your patio.
First, go to your
local gardening store and select your sunflower seeds. There
are many more varieties available now, even selecting height,
color and size. Then, a day or so before you plan on planting,
soak the seeds in water.
Select your containers.
The seed package will give guidelines on the amount of room
they need to grow successfully, smaller sunflowers can be
used with smaller containers while larger sized sunflowers
will need much larger containers for planting. Check for drainage
holes, add a few sheets of newspaper in the bottom, add soil
then plant your seeds following the depth instructions on
the package.
Place containers
in the sun and water regularly. It will only take a few days
before you will see the first signs of your sunflowers growing!
Growing sunflowers
is also a great gardening project to give kids, because everyone
loves sunflowers and most varieties are quite forgiving if
you forget to water it for a day! And they can even be planted
from seeds in July!
