Why clothing stores keep clearance items hidden in the back

Most clothing stores keep their clearance clothes hidden away in the back of the store or placed on the back side of a clothing display area near the back. And often, stores move them frequently, so it isn't as easy for bargain shoppers to just make a beeline to the clearance area and ignore the rest of the store.

Stores often don't make much money on clearance items, and sometimes they ae actually priced below cost just to clear out at the end of the season because something is better than nothing.

But when you enter a store, the stores want to entice you with all the full-priced clothes before you ever get near the sale and clearance clothes. They want you to spend the most amount of money possible and are hoping you fall in love with their newer arrivals and trendiest clothes first.

If you fall in love with something full priced, make a beeline to the clearance section and see if you can find something similar. Often you can find similar items that were in a different color, a slightly different neckline or otherwise pretty similar, just cheaper.

If you love it but can't afford to buy it full priced, ask if it will go on sale. The salespeople will often rather get you into the store at a later date when it is on sale than to lose the sale altogether.
