Homenavarrow Saving money on groceries

Have you checked your dollar store for groceries?

Many dollar stores are going far beyond the usual assortment of kitchen tools and stationary... many are also carrying food! And it can be at a pretty hefty savings, to boot.

First off, don't expect to walk into a dollar store and buy Kellogg's Froot Loops... however, chances are pretty good that you will find a generic version of the same cereal. While it is true that some generic versions are better than others, you never know what will be of the better tasting version.

Also, it is a great time to try and buy generic food items that you might not have had before. For example, maybe your kids can tell the difference between real Froot Loops and the generic version. But what about something different that your family hasn't had before, or at least not recently? You are much more likely to pull a fast one over your family with generic versions if it isn't something they have regularly with the branded version.

Some of the more popular food items at a dollar store are pasta, cake mixes, baking goods, canned food (especially things like tuna and fruit), and just about anything that has a longer shelf life.

Some dollar stores are even carrying frozen goods now.

So next time you are passing by a dollar store, especially one of the larger ones, it is worth taking a few minutes to check it out and see what they have in the way of groceries.
