Do you need a bassinet?

You love the look of bassinets, and it seems all the cool celeb moms use them. But do you really need a bassinet or are you better off spending your money on something else?

A bassinet is one of those nice things to have... you can keep the baby right next to your bed, and it is easily transportable to other rooms in the house as well as when you go out to other's houses.

On the negative side, it is only used for a short period of time (a few months) and a crib also gets the same job done. It can also be difficult to transition a baby from a bassinet to a cradle to a crib or straight to a crib.

It is up to you whether you want a bassinet or not. If money is no object, you will likely find it useful to have (I did!) and it is nice to be able to have the baby close without having to set up the crib in your bedoom instead of the baby's bedroom. But if you are on a tight budget, just spend the money on a good quality crib instead.

You might also see if someone has a bassinet you could borrow, or you could look at getting a gently used one (always check recall notices before you ever buy any baby item used!)
